Mawmluh Cave, or Grotte de Mawmluh, is one of the most prominent caves in Meghalaya, located near Sohra (Cherrapunji). Accessibility
No formal accessibility infrastructure: The cave has no paved paths, handrails, ramps, or lighting suitable for mobility-impaired individuals. Physical challenge zone: Access includes trekking, crawling, climbing, and water ingress—rendering it unsuitable for visitors with physical disabilities or limited mobility Guided experience only: Access is restricted to guided groups due to safety and terrain constraints.
Trail to the Cave: Accessible only via a 30–45 minute trek over dense forest and uneven rock terrain from the road The entrance area may require light climbing and negotiation of shifting surfaces. Inside the Cave: Visitors traverse waist-deep water, crawl through low-ceiling passages, and negotiate vertical drops up to ~5 meters with assistance. Fly into Shillong: Use Shillong Airport (Umroi) or Guwahati Airport (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport) Travel to Cherrapunji: From Shillong, take a TOURMEGHALAYA taxi about 50–55 km, 1.5–2 hours drive. Reach Krem Mawmluh Cave: Located near the Mawmluh Cherra Cement factory. A 30-minute trek from the road takes you to the cave entrance.
Reach Shillong: By Air:The nearest airport is Shillong, while Guwahati is the closest major airport with better connectivity. By Train: The nearest railway station is Guwahati Railway Station. From there, you can hire a TOURMEGHALAYA taxi to Shillong. By Road: Shillong is well-connected by road to Guwahati and other major cities in the region. You can take a taxi to reach Shillong. Reach Cherrapunji: From Shillong, you can hire a taxi to Cherrapunji. The journey takes around 2-3 hours. Reach Krem Mawmluh Cave: The cave entrance is located near the Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited factory. You’ll need to trek for about 30 minutes to reach the entrance.
