About Krem Puri Cave
Krem Puri, located in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya near Mawsynram, is a record-holding cave recognized as the world’s longest sandstone cave. First discovered in 2016 and mapped in 2018 by the Meghalaya Adventurers’ Association, the cave measures over 24.5 km in length and is a labyrinth of narrow tunnels, vertical drops, and winding sandstone corridors. Unlike Meghalaya’s more famous limestone caves, Krem Puri is composed of fossil-rich sandstone. It contains well-preserved remains of ancient marine reptiles, including mosasaurs, dating back over 65 million years. The cave's structure is complex and maze-like, often requiring trained cavers and detailed mapping to navigate safely. The cave is currently not developed for mass tourism, making it more suitable for expert explorers, researchers, and speleologists. Entry typically requires special permission, experienced guides, proper gear, and a strong understanding of underground cave systems. Its remote forested setting adds to its mystique, offering a rare glimpse into Earth’s deep past.
